Makeup Geek Shadows | Review & Swatches

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

If there is one thing I'm missing in my eyeshadow collection, it's a good set of matte and autumnal shadow shades. So instead of forking out £10 on MAC's refill palette eyeshadows I headed on over to Makeup Geek's website to buy a tonne (not literally - I had to restrain myself from buying the whole lot so only got 8) of eyeshadows which are a fraction of the price.

Top Row L - R: Vanilla Bean, Beaches & Cream, Peach Smoothie, Creme Brulee
Bottom Row L - R: Cosmopolitan, Cocoa Bear, Bitten, Last Dance

Vanilla Bean is a light shimmer with a peachy beige undertone; perfect for highlighting.

Beaches and Cream is a creamy matte natural beige with a slight peach undertone; a great transition colour to blend out harsh lines, or to add a soft all over colour to the lid.

Peach Smoothie is a light peach beige with a soft matte finish; a lovely transition colour to pop into the crease to help aid blending of darker shadows.

Crème Brulee is a medium sand color with a soft matte finish; use to blend out harsh lines or for a pretty brown smokey eye team it with Cocoa Bear and apply to the crease.

Cosmopolitan  is a rose gold with gold flecks and a shimmery finish, very similar to MAC 'Expensive Pink'.

Cocoa Bear is a matte reddish brown; apply this into the crease to add depth and warmth to your smokey eye, or blend all over the eyelid and lower lash line for a simple autumnal look.

Bitten is a matte deep maroon red; a gorgeous autumnal shade, I like to blend this into the lower lash line with Cocoa Bear to add a pop of colour to a simple winged liner look.

Last Dance is a satin finish, medium to deep plummy brown; create a gorgeous plummy smokey eye with this all over the lid, blend into the crease and add a black shadow in the 'V' shade on the outer edge to darken and smoke out.

*The pictures are without flash and with only the slightest bit of editing as I want to show the true colour of the shadows.

I'm converted. Not only is the price amazing of each individual shadow, the quality of them is up there rivalling MAC. I do have to say though that although the postage price wasn't extortionate I had to pay a custom charge of £13.87 which I wasn't expecting and left me a little annoyed having bought things from the US before and not having this. So that is something to take into consideration when purchasing these. I will also say that delivery took a little while too, but that is to be expected. I will be purchasing a Z Palette to house my new shadows and hopefully grow my Makeup Geek collection further. I'm already browsing the website for more! They are simply stunning, pigmented, buttery and finely milled. The lighter shade 'Vanilla Bean' was a little chalkier than the rest but they all apply so smoothly onto the lid without primer. With primer I can see the colours being even more so opaque and pigmented. If you love MAC shadows but don't like the cost of them you seriously need to check out Makeup Geek, the collection of shadows, pigments and other cosmetic products is huge!

They retail at $5.99 each which converts to £3.74

Have you tried any Makeup Geek eyeshadows/products? What are your thoughts?

  1. I live in the UK and never paid as much as that on postage from the US which is a shame as it seems postage cost more than the product! You have picked up some lovely shades! x

    1. Yeah I know, the postage was around $9. But the custome charge realle whacked it up! I think £8 of that was Royal Mail handling which is a rip off. But I guess if you make a large order with everything you wany you can kind of justify that charge, although I don't know whether it increases with package weight. x

  2. Postage is really putting me off as I am a UK resident. But if I bought a Mac palette like this it would cost more... I looked at their website and they have some amazing shades. Maybe next time I get paid! Those shades and that pigmentation though

    1. That was my thought process on it all. I could spend £50 on 5 MAC shadows or get 8 shadows for that price. I think it is worth it, just don't buy one or two because then I'd really struggle to justify the custom charge. I think postage was around $9 so not too high. They are lovely shadows x

    2. When I next get paid I might treat myself... I can't justify it this month because I just bought Naked2! They look so pigmented. I bought some L'Oreal shadows the other day in some really warm purples and they were just not pigmented at all which was really disappointed so I am on the look out for some good purples.
